Open oak ledges on a wall-mounted steel rail, each shelf routed with a shallow lip so books, frames, and records lean without sliding off the front. The fixings are fully concealed, so the shelves appear to float clear of the wall with nothing visible holding them up.
The rail system is the quietly clever part: shelves lift off and reposition anywhere along it in seconds, so the layout is never fixed and grows and rearranges with whatever you are collecting. Add more ledges to the same rail later and the wall simply extends.
Each ledge is solid oak, oiled to match our other pieces, and the steel rail is powder-coated to disappear against the wall. It reads more like a hanging gallery than a bookshelf — structure reduced to the essential line.

Each ledge spans 120 cm and can sit at any height along the rail, so you can run a tight rhythm of shelves or space them out for tall art. Mounted into studs or with the right fixings, it carries real weight while looking almost weightless.
Care
Dust the ledges with a dry cloth and re-oil the oak once a year to keep the grain fed and even. Distribute weight evenly along each ledge rather than loading one end, and avoid overloading a single shelf beyond its rating.
Check the wall fixings once a season if the shelves carry heavy books or records, and make sure the rail is anchored into solid backing. Keep the oak out of prolonged direct sun so the ledges age at the same rate.
Because each ledge is solid oak, scuffs and rings sand out with a light pass and a fresh coat of oil. The rail is the permanent part; the ledges are endlessly reconfigurable, so the piece adapts to every home it moves through rather than being outgrown.
