The anatomy of a good joint

You will almost never see the part of a piece of furniture that decides how long it lasts. The joint — the place where two pieces of wood meet and are made one — is hidden inside legs and under seats and behind panels, invisible in the showroom and invisible in the photograph. And yet it is the single greatest predictor of whether a chair will still be solid in fifty years or wobbling apart in five. A good joint is quiet, unseen engineering, and learning to think about it changes how you judge everything else.

The enemy every joint fights is movement. Wood expands and contracts with the seasons, a person's weight rocks a chair back and forth thousands of times, a table is dragged across a floor. Over years, these small forces work relentlessly at every connection, and a joint that relies only on glue or a couple of screws to resist them will eventually lose. The art of joinery is the art of making a connection that holds not because it is stuck together but because of the way the wood itself is interlocked — so that the forces trying to pull it apart are met by the geometry of the joint rather than by adhesive alone.

The mortise and tenon is the oldest and, for many connections, still the best answer. One piece is cut with a projecting tongue, the tenon; the other with a matching cavity, the mortise; and the tongue seats deep inside the cavity so that a long face of wood is glued to a long face of wood. This does two crucial things: it gives the glue an enormous surface to grip, and it mechanically locks the joint against racking, the sideways force that destroys weaker connections. A well-cut mortise and tenon, sometimes pinned with a small wooden peg for good measure, can outlast the person who made it.

For drawers and boxes, the dovetail does similar work in a different shape. Its interlocking fingers, cut at an angle so they resemble a bird's tail, mean that the joint physically cannot be pulled apart in the direction a drawer is opened — the wedges lock against each other no matter how many thousands of times the drawer is yanked open by a tired hand. A dovetailed drawer is one of the reliable signs you are looking at furniture built to last, which is exactly why cheaper manufacturers imitate its look with a machined joint that has the appearance without the interlock.

Contrast all of this with how disposable furniture is assembled: butt joints, where two pieces simply meet end to face and are held by glue and a screw; cam locks and dowels driven into particleboard; staples into a frame you will never see. None of these are interlocked. They rely entirely on the fastener and the glue, and once those loosen — and under years of real use they will — there is nothing in the geometry of the joint to take up the slack. The piece does not fail dramatically; it just develops a wobble, then a worse one, and one day it is firewood. It was never built to be repaired, because it was never really built to last.

There is also a subtler mark of a good joint, which is that it accounts for wood movement rather than fighting it. A skilled maker orients the grain of each part so the whole assembly expands and contracts together, and leaves room — a floating panel in a frame, a tabletop fastened so it can slide a millimetre with the seasons — so that the natural movement of the timber does not tear the joint apart. A rigid joint in solid wood is a joint waiting to crack. A good one is engineered to breathe.

So when you cannot see the joinery, look for its evidence. Turn a chair over and look for the dark lines of real mortise and tenon where the legs meet the rails, or the peg of a pinned joint. Open a drawer and look at the corners for the fingers of a genuine dovetail. Rock the piece gently and feel for the dead solidity of an interlocked frame versus the faint give of a glued and screwed one. You are looking, in every case, for evidence that someone thought about the forces this piece would face for the next several decades and answered them with geometry rather than hope. The joint is where furniture is truly made or merely assembled, and it is worth learning to read even though you will spend the rest of the piece's life never seeing it again.
